What Is Amazon Kids+ and Is It Enough for Parental Controls?

Amazon Kids+ offers curated content for young children, but it's not a complete parental control solution. Here's what it does — and what's missing.

What Is Amazon Kids+?

Amazon Kids+ (formerly Amazon FreeTime Unlimited) is a subscription service that provides a curated library of books, apps, games, and videos for children aged 3–12. On Smart TV, it replaces the standard home screen with a simplified, age-appropriate interface.

Price: $4.99/month for Prime members, $7.99/month without Prime. Available as a standalone subscription or bundled with an Amazon Kids Edition device.

What Amazon Kids+ Includes

  • Thousands of books, audiobooks, and learning apps
  • Curated videos and movies appropriate for children
  • Educational games and apps
  • Daily screen time goals (set by parents)
  • Parent dashboard showing usage and educational progress
  • Content pre-approved by Amazon's editorial team
  • No ads

What Amazon Kids+ Doesn't Do

  • No access to Netflix, Disney+, or standard Prime Video — Kids+ has its own library, separate from your Prime Video subscription
  • No real-time content monitoring — you see how long your child watched, not what they watched
  • No remote lock — you can't instantly lock the TV from your phone
  • No cross-device management — doesn't manage their Android or iOS phone
  • Limited flexibility for older children — the curated environment frustrates kids over 8 who want access to their own shows
  • No GPS tracking

Is Amazon Kids+ Enough?

For children aged 3–7: Amazon Kids+ is excellent as a primary environment. Young children don't need access to Netflix or YouTube, and the curated library is substantial. Pair it with a 1–1.5 hour daily limit (set within Kids+) and it works well.

For children aged 8+: Kids+ becomes too restrictive. Children this age want to watch their shows on Netflix and Disney+, and Kids+ mode blocks those apps. You'll need a different solution.
