The Problem With App-Level Controls

Screen time controls built into apps — YouTube's bedtime reminders, Instagram's usage dashboard — are easily bypassed because they're enforced by the same app the child is trying to use. The child controls the device; the device controls the app; the app controls itself. It's not a serious system.

Why Built-In OS Controls Aren't Enough Either

Apple Screen Time and Google Family Link are more robust — they operate at the OS level. But both have well-documented bypass methods:

• Factory reset (removes all restrictions)
• Time zone manipulation (resets daily limits)
• Using a second device or a friend's phone
• Browser workarounds for app-blocked content

The Solution: Device Management + Monitoring

True parental controls require two layers working together:
