Roblox Safety Guide for Parents: What You Need to Know in 2025
Roblox has 65 million daily players — many of them children. Here's what the real risks are and how to keep your child safe on Roblox.
What Is Roblox?
Roblox is a platform where users play user-created games — not a single game itself. Over 65 million people play daily, and the majority of players are under 16. Children can play games, create games, chat with other players, trade virtual items, and spend real money (via Robux, the in-game currency).
The Real Risks on Roblox
Online Predators
Roblox's chat system allows children to communicate with strangers. Child predators have documented use of Roblox to groom children — asking for personal information, moving conversations to Discord or other platforms, and sending inappropriate content. This is Roblox's most serious safety risk.
Inappropriate User-Created Content
While Roblox moderates content, the sheer volume of user-created games (50+ million games) means inappropriate content regularly makes it through. Games simulating violence, sexual themes, or drug use have been found on the platform.
In-App Purchases and Scams
Robux (real money) can be spent on cosmetic items and game passes. Children are frequently targeted by "free Robux" scams that steal account credentials or payment information.
Roblox's Safety Features (Enable These)
- Go to Roblox → account → Settings → Privacy.
- Set Who can chat with me in app? to Friends or No one for under-13 accounts.
- Enable Account Restrictions — this limits the child to a curated list of age-appropriate games and disables all chat with strangers.
- Set up Parental PIN to prevent your child from changing privacy settings.
Managing Roblox Time with Cylux
Roblox is highly addictive — the variable reward loop of finding new games and earning items triggers the same dopamine mechanisms as other compulsive apps. Set firm time limits:
- In Cylux App Controls: set Roblox to maximum 1 hour/day on school days
- Block Roblox during homework hours
- Block Roblox after 8 PM on school nights
In-App Purchase Controls
- Remove payment methods from the Roblox account so Robux purchases require you to add a card each time
- Set a monthly Robux allowance if you decide to allow purchases
- Explain to your child that "free Robux" offers are always scams
Have the Stranger Conversation Specifically About Games
Children often don't understand that someone they've played Roblox with for 3 weeks is still a stranger. Be explicit: "Anyone you've only met in a game is a stranger, even if you feel like you know them. If they ask to move to another app or ask personal questions, tell me immediately."
