Parental Controls for iPhone and iPad: What Works in 2025
iOS Screen Time is powerful but has gaps. Here's how to use Apple's built-in controls alongside Cylux for complete iPhone and iPad parental control.
Apple Screen Time: What It Does Well
Apple's built-in Screen Time (Settings → Screen Time) is the most tightly integrated parental control system available on iPhone and iPad. Its strengths:
- App limits — set daily time limits per app or app category
- Downtime — schedule periods when only approved apps work
- Content & Privacy Restrictions — restrict explicit content, purchases, location sharing changes
- Communication limits — control who your child can call and text
- Screen Distance — prompts to hold phone further away (eye health)
Apple Screen Time's Limitations
- No GPS tracking built in (requires sharing location via Find My, which children can turn off)
- Screen Time passcode is bypassable if the child knows your Apple ID
- No cross-platform support — can't manage Smart TV or Android from the same dashboard
- No call/SMS monitoring (Apple doesn't expose this to third-party apps on iOS)
- No alerts when your child opens a specific app
How to Set Up Apple Screen Time
- On your child's iPhone, go to Settings → Screen Time → Turn On Screen Time.
- Tap This is My Child's iPhone.
- Set a Screen Time Passcode (different from the device PIN).
- In Content & Privacy Restrictions, set the appropriate age rating for apps, movies, and TV shows.
- In App Limits, add categories like Social Networking (1 hour/day) and Entertainment (2 hours/day).
- In Downtime, set school hours (8 AM – 3 PM) and bedtime (10 PM – 7 AM).
Adding Cylux for Cross-Platform Management
If your family also has a Smart TV or Android device, Cylux unifies all devices into one parent dashboard — something Apple Screen Time can't do.
Cylux on iPhone provides:
- GPS location tracking (with Always On permission)
- SOS panic button
- Cross-device activity reports (see phone + TV usage together)
- Consistent scheduling across all devices
Recommended Setup for iPhone-Using Families
- Use Apple Screen Time for app limits, content restrictions, and downtime scheduling on the iPhone.
- Add Cylux for GPS tracking, Smart TV control, and cross-platform reporting.
- Enable Family Sharing so you can manage purchases and subscriptions across the family.
Important: Don't Share Your Apple ID
If your child knows your Apple ID password, they can disable Screen Time controls. Use a unique, strong Screen Time passcode and never share your Apple ID with your child.
