How to Use SOS Panic Button for Kids' Safety

Cylux's SOS panic button lets children instantly alert parents in an emergency. Here's how it works and how to make sure your child knows how to use it.

What Is the SOS Panic Button?

The Cylux SOS panic button is a large, prominent button in the Cylux child app on your child's phone. When pressed, it immediately sends an emergency alert to all connected parent accounts — including your child's real-time GPS coordinates, their device battery level, and a map of their exact location.

When Would a Child Use SOS?

  • Feeling unsafe in an unfamiliar location
  • Being followed or approached by a stranger
  • A medical emergency when they can't call
  • Getting lost in an unfamiliar area
  • A dangerous situation at school or a social event
  • Any moment when they feel they need immediate parent attention

How the Alert Reaches Parents

When SOS is pressed:

  1. A high-priority push notification is sent immediately to all parent devices connected to the child's profile.
  2. The notification includes the child's name, current GPS coordinates, and address.
  3. Tapping the notification opens a map showing the exact location.
  4. An alert sound plays on the parent's phone even if it's on silent.

The alert cuts through Do Not Disturb mode — ensuring you receive it even at night.

Setting Up SOS

  1. Install the Cylux child app on your child's Android or iOS phone.
  2. During setup, ensure Location — Always On permission is granted.
  3. Enable notifications on the parent app and ensure Cylux has notification override for Do Not Disturb.
  4. Test the SOS button with your child before they need it — do a practice press so they know what the experience feels like.

Teaching Your Child When to Use SOS

Practice conversations matter:

  • "If you ever feel unsafe, press the big SOS button. We'll see exactly where you are and call you immediately."
  • "Even if you can't talk, just press SOS — we'll come to you."
  • "You won't get in trouble for pressing it. It's there to keep you safe."

The last point is critical — children sometimes hesitate to press SOS in unsafe situations because they fear parental anger. Explicitly removing that fear encourages appropriate use.

SOS + GPS Tracking: Complete Safety

SOS works best alongside passive GPS tracking. While SOS alerts parents to an emergency, passive tracking means you already know generally where your child is before the alert — which can significantly reduce response time.
