How to Block Apps on Smart TV for Kids

Step-by-step guide to blocking YouTube, TikTok, or any app on Smart TV so your child can only access approved streaming content.

Why You'd Want to Block Specific Apps on Smart TV

YouTube on Smart TV has no age gate — a child searching for Peppa Pig can easily click their way to inappropriate content within minutes. TikTok, certain news apps, and some games accessible through the Smart TV App Store can expose kids to content far beyond their maturity level. Blocking these apps while leaving safe content (like Netflix Kids profiles or Disney+) accessible is the smart approach.

Method 1: Amazon's Built-in App Restrictions

Smart TV lets you hide apps from the home screen using the PIN system, but this doesn't actually prevent access — it only makes finding the app harder. A determined child can still navigate to it through Alexa voice search.

Method 2: Cylux App Blocking (Recommended)

Cylux enforces true app blocking — the app opens but immediately shows a lock screen that requires a parent PIN to dismiss. Here's how:

  1. Open the Cylux parent app on your phone.
  2. Tap your child's Smart TV device.
  3. Tap App Controls.
  4. You'll see all apps installed on the Smart TV. Toggle off any app you want to block.
  5. Changes take effect within seconds.

Blocking YouTube Specifically

YouTube is the app most parents want to block but also partially allow (for educational content). Cylux lets you:

  • Block YouTube entirely — one toggle.
  • Block YouTube during specific hours — e.g., block during school hours but allow on weekends.
  • Monitor YouTube usage — see how much time is spent there without blocking it.

Blocking Newly Installed Apps Automatically

With Cylux's App Approval mode, any new app installed on the Smart TV is automatically blocked until you approve it. This prevents your child from installing and using apps without your knowledge.

Approved App List

Rather than blocking individual apps, you can switch Cylux to Allowlist mode — only apps you explicitly approve will work. Everything else is blocked by default. This is ideal for younger children.

Common Apps Parents Block on Smart TV

  • YouTube (unmoderated content)
  • TikTok (not suitable for children under 13)
  • Twitch (streaming platform with mature content)
  • News apps (disturbing current events)
  • Certain games with violent content
  • Browser apps (unrestricted internet access)
