Back to School Screen Time: Setting Up Rules That Last All Year

The start of the school year is the perfect time to establish screen time rules. Here's how to set up Cylux for a successful school year.

Why Back to School Is the Best Time for New Screen Rules

Children are more receptive to new rules at natural transition points — the start of a school year, a move to a new house, the beginning of summer. The back-to-school transition is one of the strongest: new grade, new teacher, new schedule. Introducing screen time rules during this reset makes them feel like part of the new normal rather than a sudden restriction.

The School Year Screen Time Framework

Weekday Schedule

  • Morning: No screens before school (6:30–8:00 AM)
  • After school: No TV 3:00–5:30 PM (homework first)
  • Evening: 1.5 hours allowed (5:30–8:00 PM)
  • Bedtime: Devices off at 8:30–9:30 PM depending on age

Weekend Schedule

  • Daily limit: 3 hours, split across morning and afternoon
  • No screens before 8 AM
  • Bedtime lock: 10 PM

Setting This Up in Cylux

Step 1: Weekday Daily Limit

Set 1.5 hours on weekdays, 3 hours on weekends as the daily limits in Cylux → Screen Time → Daily Limits.

Step 2: Homework Block

Add a schedule: Block Smart TV Mon–Fri, 3:00 PM – 5:30 PM. Label it "Homework."

Step 3: Bedtime Lock

Add a second schedule: Block Smart TV every night, 8:30 PM – 7:00 AM (adjust for your child's age and sleep needs).

Step 4: Morning Block (Optional)

Block TV Mon–Fri, midnight – 8:00 AM to prevent early morning TV before school.

Introducing Rules to Your Child

Frame it as a "school year agreement" — explain that these are the rules for when school is in session. Include the reasoning: "You need sleep to learn, and you need to do your homework before TV." Ask for their input on the specific times to build buy-in.

What Cylux Handles Automatically

Once set up, Cylux manages all the above without daily parental action. You're not nagging about homework time, you're not standing at the TV at bedtime — the system handles it. Your job becomes reviewing the weekly report and having productive conversations about what your child is watching, not enforcing the rules minute by minute.
